Sarah Deumling is the owner, with her three adult children, and manager of the Zena Forest in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The 1350 acre forest is under a permanent conservation easement funded by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) as a working forest with a dual mandate of (oak) habitat conservation and commercial forestry under FSC certification. Ten years ago her son Ben started Zena Forest Products which manufactures local hardwoods, predominantly oak but also maple, ash, madrone etc. into FSC-certified flooring and lumber for furniture and cabinets. Previously unused species have become assets rather than liabilities and Oregon residents can now purchase local hardwood products.
